Kerrang double page spread analysis

Colours
These colours have been used as they contrast with one another very well and give off this gothic feel which this double page spread portrays. On the very left hand side of this double page spread we have a section where there has been white and some green coloured text placed over a black background. Using these colours as text over the black background makes it stand out and clearly readable for the consumer, for example the main heading of the double page spread which in white clearly contrasts with its black background to gather the readers attention. This is also the case for the white text from the main article and the green coloured text which has also been used on this section of the double page spread. To the right this black and white theme continues in the picture which has been edited to be black and white which sticks with the theme but also gives off this old, gothic feel which this article portrays, which in turn signifies to the reader what genre of music this double page spread is focusing on gothic.

Design
This double page spread has been designed to give this double page spread a gothic feel which relates to the band that the article is focusing on. This has been done by a mixture of key factors including colour, font, pictures etc. As we can see this double page spread is without colour which already gives off an old theme to it and with the style/font of the heading and text we really get a gothic impression from these two pages. Unlike most double page spreads where the picture is place on the left and then text on the right this double page spread has a different approach where the text has been added on the left and then picture to the right, but this picture takes up around 3/4 of the entire double page spread unlike typical double page spread pictures which usually take up around half the spread. The picture being black and white gives off the gothic feel and its overall size really amplifies this feeling.

How the words are used
The text used is based on a black background and written in white so that it appeals to the reader and stands out. Unlike NME and KERRANG magazine, Q tends to include more text in their spreads and in a small font, the word Gothic is also written in a different font style which relates to gothic style. The text also starts with a dropped capital, certain words are also highlighted to emphasize their importance to the spread.

Colour
The main colours used are black and white which clearly stand out on eachother as they are a complete contrast. Black is sterotypically associated with indie/rock which is why it has been used on these pages. There are also elements of red and yellow which add vibrancy and therefore make the page look more interesting. As the rest of the page is quite plain, the use of red and yellow vividly stand out. Overall, the black and white make the double page spread edgey and serious but the elements of red and yellow make it young and quirky.
How are words used?
The title of Billie Joe Armstrong takes up half of one page making it clear who the story is about and it doesn't leave a lot of space for the rest of the text. There isn't a lot of text but this page is only supposed to be a little summary of meeting the band because most readers are probably already very familiar with Greenday. By using 'Billie Joe Facts' it outlines important facts in a small space which gets to the point. The use of 'The boss...' relates to Billie Joe's position and again gets to the point with only a few words. Without even reading the text you know that he is the main member of the band. The text is then separated by a scribbly line which realtes the the scribbly handrwriting style used on the front cover and contents page. The rest of text is alligned in neat columns creating a neat appearance which is easy to read. Parts of the texts are highlighted in yellow to show they are interesting and important parts. A large letter to start off the text is very common but this 'A' is quite unique as it's on a red patch that vibrantly stands out as it the biggest element of red used.
Overall impression
This double page spread gives you a brief but informative summary about the lead member of Greenday, Billie Joe Armstrong. The title does what it says, 'meet the band'. Overall, these pages create a modern, edgey, simple impression that will attract the young target audience, definitely Greenday fans. The pages include a lot of unique features such as the font styles used, highlighted sections, use of fake tape and a brief fact file. Even though the double page spread is youthful and quirky, it still looks professional and classy with the use of colours and neat structure of text.

NME contents page analysis

Colour
The main colours used on this contents are black, white and red, this contrasts well making the page easy to understand and also sticking to the NME colour scheme. There is a bit of yellow on the bottom left, this stands out but not too much as there is only a little of it. There is enough for it to stand out and get the readers attention, but not too much that it dominates the whole contents page. It must be important, and want the readers to see it clearly especcially if its on a black background which makes it more eyecatching. The colours give it an old fashion, indie fell to it which is what they may have wanted, as indie is the genre of the magazine. NME is in red as thats the colour it has always been, and its also the magazine name so it should be the focus of the magazine.

Design
The design is very basic, easy to read and understand, so that the readers can spot which topic is on which page. The sub-heading for each topic are in large font for example 'Band index' this stands out for the reader to see. There is also the other headings down the right hand side which are clear to see. They are in a neat order making it clear to read. The main topic of the contents is placed in the centre of the page making it eyecatching, and the second largest font is being used making it seem important. Overall the whole design shows the genre of indie, its in a very neat style and seems to be very orderly.

Images
In this contents page you can see that there is only one main image which is shown in the near-center of the page which suggests that it associated with the main topic of this issue by NME. This image takes up more space than any other feature on this page therefore it automatically grabs the readers attention as it is the main story. The image is what looks like a retro feeling cinema from a low angle shot so that we can see up the building but this is very non-typical of music magazines as they typically have musicians placed on a contents page therefore this makes the reader wonder why they have chosen this picture which in turn will encourage them to read on. The image also sticks well the black, white, and red colour scheme which keeps the rock feel alive on the page so that the reader will always feel as though they are reading a rock genre magazine.

Pose hair style, Make-up
This contents page only has one main focus picture and because it is a building which is very untypical of a music magazine therefore it makes it hard to talk about pose, hair style, and make-up. There is no hair style throughout the picture/page, and no make-up, but there is the low angle shot of the building which appears to be a retro cinema. This allows us to see the whole top part of the building but surrounds it in mystery because it is so untypical of a music magazine just to put this picture of a building on the page.
How are the words used on this page?
The words on this page summarise clearly the content of the magazine. The stories in the contents are listed in a small yet bold text, with the segment headings i.e news are much bigger to show clearly what the text underneath is about. It also breaks it down so its more understandable so the reader. 'The end of the Astoria' is the biggest font appart from 'NME THIS WEEK', this shows this is the most important infomation that is featured in the magazine, and that they want it to stand out the most for readers to see.
Language
The word 'CONTENTS' immediately stands out indicating to the reader what the purpose of the page is. It is a word that is used constantly in reading material and will be very familiar to the audience. As well as this, the word and the way in which it has been represented also complies with the overall bluntness of the page. . Throughout the contents it almost seems as though the title and headings are being shouted at to you. I think the use of colours and capital letters are what portray this, as well as the 'to the point' language used.
Overall impression
I think that the whole contents goes well, even though they used a building as the main focus instead of a band. This makes it look unique and very interesting that makes you want to read further to see what its about. However one thing i dont like about this contents page is the yellow text at the bottom. I think it takes away the old fashioned feel to it, and makes it look a bit tacky and unprofessional. But overall i really like it, and think it works well for the genre of music.

Kerrang contents page analysis

Colour
The colour mostly used is white, this makes the text and the other colours stand out. The images used take up most of the space as some of them are quite large, there are lots of colours used in the images but red seems to be used quite a lot. The red in the images match the word 'contents' and the text underneath the images. The text is also black which contrasts well with the white background. The colours used on the contents contrasts to the images used on the cover. Lastly the colours used show greendays fun side, and what they are like as a band. The colours, espessially the red brings more excitment to the page, and makes the contents less boring and dull.

Design

The contents spreads over two pages, this shows that there is a lot content inside the magazine. The images are in a neat order on both pages, there all lined up and not craped together. The text underneath is also in a neat order, its all in columns and seem very organised. There are scribbles over the contents page just like the cover, this makes it more exciting and shows the fun side of the magazine. The plain background tones down the contents and makes it look professional instead of cheap and tacky. It also makes you keep your eyes on the text and images. The neatness of the imags and text, and the scribbles and masthead 'Greenday' go well together as it targets the younger audiance and the older audiance at the same time, because it shows the fun and interesting side but also shows sopistication.

Images
The four images of Greenday show the stages of their career, and their different generations. Again it relates to both the younger and older generation, because the older generation would remember them and what they were like when they started off, and the younger generation will know what they are like now. All the images of Greenday show how fun and mischievous they are, and it makes you more intersted in them and want to read about them. There is also a big images of John Lydon from the sex pistols, this relates to Greenday as John is also a ledgend just like Greenday. Four of their albums are there to illistrate how successful they have been over the years, and it makes them look like true ledgends.

Pose, hair style, make-up
Some of the images are of Greenday performing to crowds, and some of them are of them hanging out as friends. This shows both sides of their lives and that they love making music but also making sure that they work on their relationship as frineds. The image when they were younger shows them with funky hair styles with different colours, this makes them look unique and interesting. The older image they still have funky hair, this shows they havent changed a whole lot. Billie joe armstrong is wearing eyeliner, which he does all the time, again makes them unique and gives them an edge, as you dont know a lot of men who wear it.

How are the words used?
The text on the contents pages are neat, this makes it easy to find the pages you want. The most eyecathing word is 'Greenday', its got the biggest font and the unique stlye makes it interesting, you can also tell that its the most important word. The red page numbers with the black text makes it easy to understand as its separated from the text. The word 'contents' is the only word with a red background, even though its small you know its important because its clear to see witht the red background. The headings are nice and clear, it brings attention towards it with the white text on a black background, and the black text and the white background. The words 'meet the band' suggests that you get to learn about the band as individuals and the audiance will like this as they can read in detail about their favourite genre. The scribbles relates to the pages, giving the readers more of an insight of whats inside.

Language
The different font size attracts the reader as it doesnt look the same and boring, but makes it exciting. The text is in everyday normal language which diffuses any confusion and is not intimidating to the target audiance. The stories features are unusual and make you want to read more as they are short, blunt, catchy and to the point. By using the word 'classic' instead of just stating interviews makes the interview sound of high importance and special.

Overall impression
It looks professional and smart, but also funky and vibrant at the same time. Its important that it looks high quality as its the 'ledgend' edition so it has to look good. The whole contents attracts a wide range of audiance as its focused on ledgens of rock. The quirky font style brings back thge youth to the magazine. Overall the contents has a sophisticated, fun, exciting impression which relates to the familliar elements of rock.

Q contents page analysis

Colour
The most dominating colour used on the this contents is red, it brings out alot of vibrancy to the page which works well for Q. Also the masthead 'Q' is always in red, this relates to the famous logo and makes it more recognizable. The whole colour scheme for the contents is the same for the front cover, which is red, white and black. The colour scheme used makes it more sophisticated and classy but not at all boring as it has a seductive edge to it. I also think that Cherly Cole being in grey contrasts well with the red and adds more passion to the contents, and also adds dramatic affect as a whole and to the images.
Design
All of the images and text are on a clear background, this makes it more clear of what the text says also makes all other elements stand out, whereas if it was on a bright background the images and text wouldnt be as eyecathing. The contents spreads over two pages, this makes it look like there is alot of interesting things to read inside. The images are designed in a very unique way, it isnt all lined up neat but its all packed togather in an untidy order. I think that its more interesting when its messy as it gives more of an egde to it. The text on the otherhand is in a neat order surrounding the images, and is still in the same colour theme. I think having the text neat and the images messy goes really well together and seems to have a succsseful outcome. The text is also in a formal style, this makes it easy to understand for the target audiance.
Images
On this contents there are a lot of images used with numbers on them to indicate the page it is on and the different stories, this makes it far more interesting for the reader, whereas if it had a lot of text it would start to become boring. Cheryl cole dominates the first page of the double page contents, this is because she is the main feature of this issue so people would esspecially want to know what pages she is on.

Pose,hair style, make-up
She is posing in a sexy way like on the cover, this will attract the readers attention from the busy contents page. She is wearing sexy clothes with spikes and slits, this creates a suductive and dark side to her and also the genre of the magazine. All the images are different , there is no link to one another, for example there are pictures of bands playing live (biffy clyro) this shows the rock side to the magazine. There are also double page spread and a picture of Dean martin, this shows the older generation. Overall this shows us that there are a huge range of people reading Q and not just ristricted to one generation.

How are the words used?
The masthead runs across both pages, its clear to see and bold. The words 'contents' stands out clearly as its black on a red background, and also the issue number '283' stands out, this shows the popularity of the magazine. The large page numbers are also clear, this means that it is more important then the smaller text, because the bigger the text the more important it is. There is quite alot of text on the contents, this means that the magazine has a lot of content. The first page text is all the features and on the second page is shows the regulars and the Q review. Lastly the red lines under each story makes it easy to understand and quite sopisticated.

Language
The language on this contents is quite high class but not too much that the target audiance wont want to read it or understand it, but enough to target the morte mature audinace. The headings are short and straight to the point and not boring the readers with pointless text. The words 'regulars' makes the readers more intimate with the magazine as some readers are regulars. The word 'special' stands out as its bold and in red, this makes it more interesting and eyecathing, which is what Q is trying to do.
Overall impression
I think that a lot is going on in the contents, however it doesnt look messy it still looks professional and classy. The colour scheme makes it more intersting and sophisticated and it goes well with the main feature Cheryl Cole. You can tell by the content of the text that the reader is getting more then what they paid for, which is a good thing as it doesnt turn off the audiance because of the lack of content. It seems to have targeted more of a mature and older generation with the text and pictures, this shows the personality of the reader. Overall it shows the passion of rock with the red vibrant colours, but also shows the dark and dangerours side with Cheryl Coles sexyness.
